While the art of getting free drinks is much simpler than people make it out to be if you walk into a bar I can guarantee you, you will come out drunk and still have money in your pocket.

When you walk into a place full of guys and sit down with a sense of confidence in yourself, even if you look like the ogre Princess Fiona (thank god I only do on some days), there is a sense of respect people have for you. You see peopleвЂ™s first date, you see someone handling their breakup, you see people laughing, and bartenders pissed off. I took a sit down asked for my favorite drink and quietly observed everything going on around me, the conversation between two men about their day, the guy who recently got dumped and told the bartender all about it, then an attractive looking man two seats over.ДЄnd within 15 minutes the same attractive guy, moved two seats over and began talking to me. But hey, I can handle this for 45 minutes. I then thought W ould this be alcoholism? ItвЂ™s kind of sad to have a drink alone on my birthday. ItвЂ™s also a good idea to let a friend know where youвЂ™ll be or just check in with them periodically throughout the night.Дo you enjoy going out alone? It's tempting to knock a few back because we all know that alcohol is basically a social lubricant but remember to pace yourself. If you do decide to head out on a solo mission, make sure you are aware of your surroundings and arenвЂ™t drinking to the point where you donвЂ™t know your name. Not to end with a lecture but itвЂ™s important to remember that not everyone has good intentions.

Not sure how to break the ice? Ask them for drink recommendations. If the bar isnвЂ™t too busy, itвЂ™s likely theyвЂ™ll be willing to engage with you to help pass the time. I mean, theyвЂ™re basically getting paid to socialize and if theyвЂ™re smart, they better work for that tip, mmkay. If youвЂ™re a little nervous about initiating conversation with a perfect stranger, chat up the bartender if theyвЂ™re not too busy. Additionally, if you choose a place or activity that you really like, itвЂ™ll feel less awkward and more like youвЂ™re there for a purpose. For example, I personally would not go to a rave on my own but count me in for an upscale bar and lounge where the staff is super friendly and hospitable. Location, Location, LocationДЄlthough itвЂ™s perfectly okay to go anywhere alone, I do believe there are some places that lend themselves more than others to a party of one. But if youвЂ™re looking to spark up a conversation or make a new friend, itвЂ™s important that your body language communicates that. If youвЂ™re going to stare at your phone all night and not acknowledge anyone, no one will approach you. Do you want strangers to talk to you or nah? Whatever you decide, your body language will say it loud and clear. If you decide to go out alone, you have to make a decision. They might be jealous that they didnвЂ™t have the courage to be out and about alone like you. And honestly, donвЂ™t give too much energy to what people think. But itвЂ™s important to look confident and not lonely. It might feel a little weird at first, especially when it looks like everyone else has a date or a posse. So as I like to tell people-Stop waiting for the weekend, stop waiting for a holiday, stop waiting for summer and most importantly, stop waiting on your friends to join you. DonвЂ™t get me wrong, sharing a meal with people I care about is one of my favorite pastimes but a solo soiree every once in awhile is just what the doctor ordered. ItвЂ™s a great way to meet new people or just get some quiet time to reflect on my day or week. For me, having a meal alone or enjoying a drink solo every once in awhile is an enjoyable experience. In a city as populous as New York City, people tend to shy away from solo dining and some even think itвЂ™s weird.
